TRISTAN DA CUNHA 1962 POTATO STAMPS REPRINT SHEETLET
Potato Stamps sheetlet featuring reprints of the 1d Rockhopper Penguin local use 'potato' stamps proposed by Allan Crawford. Fresh and fine.
Note: the local use 'potato' stamps, so-called because islanders used potatoes as currency, were printed in sheets of 35 by Hortors Ltd of Johannesburg. The design formed the basis of a petition in 1946 to the Postmaster General in the UK for Tristan Da Cunha to issue stamps – the request was denied and it wasn't until 1952 that overprinted definitives of St Helena became Tristan Da Cunha's first official postage stamps
